Personal Teacher · Nym and Duolingo Max
Is Nym or Duolingo Max better for learning to order coffee in Spanish in three weeks?
If your trip is in three weeks and you want to order coffee in Spanish when you get there, this is the request we put to both. With Duolingo Max you get a café Roleplay and a Video Call added to the Duolingo course. With Iris, the Nym on the Personal Teacher page, you get a three-week practice app built for exactly this request.
If your trip is in three weeks, pick Nym: your plan is built around that date, and nothing on Duolingo’s pages knows about it. If you want to speak out loud to something that answers back, pick Duolingo Max, as long as you’re willing to work through a course to reach the café. That spoken Video Call is the one thing you get from Max and not from Nym, and for a café counter it isn’t a small thing.
The same request to both
“I want to be able to order coffee in Spanish before a trip in three weeks. Where do I start?”
What Iris did with it
Before your trip, you can practise with Café Confidence, the app Iris built for this request. On the Personal Teacher page, Iris says it has “shaped this into a three-week café practice companion: a tiny daily plan, a phrase deck, and a counter role-play, with your progress saved between visits”.
Open the app there to try it. Its description also includes “pronunciation help, and progress that carries into your trip”.
What Duolingo Max does with it
Ordering coffee is a Roleplay scenario, so you get the exact practice. What you don’t get is the three-week plan: you work along a course path that starts where the course starts, and the café scenario unlocks wherever the path puts it.
Where Nym and Duolingo Max differ
The answer
Nym
You get an app built for your goal and your deadline, with a daily plan, phrase deck, counter role-play and saved progress.
Duolingo Max
You get a course, with a café Roleplay and a video call inside it.
Three weeks
Nym
Your plan covers the three weeks from the day you asked. Miss two days and tell Iris; you get the rest re-planned.
Duolingo Max
Your course has no end date. Streaks and daily goals push you on, but nothing knows about your trip.
Getting stuck
Nym
Ask in the same conversation: why it’s “un café con leche” and not “una”, or what “para llevar” means. You get an answer at your level.
Duolingo Max
You get your responses scored in Roleplay; on Video Call, Lily responds to you in real time and keeps a transcript. If you have a grammar question, that’s a separate exercise from the call.
Speaking aloud
Nym
With Nym you practise by text: the app drills you on phrases, your pronunciation help is written, and there’s no live voice call. If you want to practise speaking out loud, Max wins this row.
Duolingo Max
You speak on Video Call, and speaking to a face on a timer is closer to the counter than typing.
The app
Nym
You get Café Confidence as a small private app Iris built for this goal, with its own database. You can open it inside Nym on your desktop or phone. Your progress saves between visits, so you pick up where you left off. Iris can open it and run a drill with you, and as your plan changes you can have it updated or rolled back. Café Confidence counts as one of your two apps on Free or five on Plus.
Duolingo Max
You use the Duolingo app, which is the same for everyone: the course path with Roleplay and Video Call inside it. Streaks and leaderboards push you along. Your progress lives in your Duolingo account, and after your trip the course carries on along the path in the language you chose. You find the Max price only inside the app; neither the help page nor the web plans page gives one, and the web page shows only Super.
Cost
Nym
Nym is in early access. On Free you get $5 in credits a month, one Nym and two personal apps. On Plus, $20 a month, you get more credits, five apps, texting and scheduled check-ins.
Duolingo Max
You see Max’s price only in the app. If you want the other spoken-practice option, Gliglish gives you 10 free minutes a day and charges $29 a month for unlimited.
The two side by side
| Detail | Nym | Duolingo Max |
|---|---|---|
| Café practice | A private app built for the goal: daily plan, phrase deck, counter role-play, progress kept between visits | Roleplay “ordering a coffee with Lin” inside the course; Video Call with Lily |
| Deadline | Sized to your trip date | None; the course path sets the order |
| Speaking aloud | Text; written pronunciation help | Spoken Video Call, real time, with a transcript after |
| Questions | Ask in the same chat, in English | Roleplay scores responses; questions are a separate exercise |
| Platforms | Web; desktop app (Mac, Windows, Linux) | Max is iOS and Android only; it cannot be bought on the web |
| Cost | Free: $5 in credits a month. Plus: $20 a month | Max price is in-app only; Gliglish: 10 free minutes a day, $29 a month |
When to pick Duolingo Max instead
Duolingo Max is the better choice if you want to speak out loud to something that answers back, and you’re happy to work through a course to get there. On Video Call you rehearse out loud, and you get nothing like that from Nym: your practice is typed.
