The deadline and the letter

Your cancellation

Send it by the 4th of the month

You’re billed on the 17th, and Planet Fitness needs 8 days’ notice, plus about 5 days for the post.

Planet Fitness: Mail a letter to your home club.

Inside a minimum term, ending early costs a $58 buyout.

Use certified mail with a return receipt, so you can prove when it arrived.

Find out how your gym takes cancellations

Look in your contract or your online account for three things: how the gym accepts cancellations, how many days’ notice it needs, and whether you’re still in a minimum term.

Most chains take one or more of these: online in your account, in person at your home club, or a letter. Plenty still won’t cancel by phone or email.

Where you live matters. In New York City and California, a gym that let you join online has to let you cancel online too.

Cancel Planet Fitness

Planet Fitness lists three ways to end a membership: a letter to your home club, a visit to your home club, or the member portal on its website. It notes that some rules vary by state.

The club has to receive your request at least 8 days before your next billing date to stop that charge. The same 8 days applies before the annual fee date.

If you’re still inside a minimum term, ending early costs a $58 buyout. Your billing dates are in the member portal and on your membership agreement.

Cancel LA Fitness, Crunch, Anytime Fitness or 24 Hour Fitness

LA Fitness takes cancellations by mail to PO Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619, at any club’s front desk, or in your online account.

A letter postmarked 5 business days before your billing date stops the next bill. If it’s postmarked later and you’re billed once more, LA Fitness says it refunds that bill.

Crunch lets some clubs cancel online in the Member Portal, under Manage Membership. Everywhere else, you call or visit your home club. The notice period is in your agreement.

Anytime Fitness handles it by email to your home club. Each club’s page on its site has a “Cancel my membership” email ready to send. The notice and any fee come from your agreement.

24 Hour Fitness monthly members cancel in their online account, past an offer to stay. Limited-term and prepaid members cancel in the club.

Put it in writing and keep the proof

  • Write the date, your name, your member number and your home club.
  • Say plainly that you want to cancel, and ask them to stop all charges, including the annual fee.
  • Ask for written confirmation with the date the membership ends.
  • Mail it by certified mail with a return receipt, or get a printed copy at the desk.
  • Keep the confirmation until a billing date has passed with no charge.

If they keep charging you

Write to the gym and ask for the money back. Attach your cancellation confirmation or the certified mail receipt.

If that doesn’t work, dispute the charge with your card issuer or your bank. Many gyms draw from a checking account, and your bank handles those disputes too. Send them the same proof.

Or have your Nym do it

Text your Nym “cancel my gym.” It shows you the plan, the price and the renewal date, then cancels once you say yes. If your gym only takes letters, it writes yours and reminds you two days before the deadline.
